Flux is a stair chair that allows the EMT operator to lift the patient easier and transport the patient effectively at stairs. Also the unique feature of this product is the transformation from lying position to sitting position.

During the research, EMT operators are considered to be one of the most dangerous jobs in America. 21,300 EMT operators were injured in 2014 and they are 21 times more dangerous than the national average. Most of the injuries occurs due to sprains and strains and they come from lifting the patients up.

Problem

Lifting Force

Lifiing up 200-400 pound person can cause a serious back injury. Majority of the injuries are from lifting up the patients.

Repetitive movement

When the EMT arrives to the patient, there are a lot of repetitive movement during the process. These repetitive movements can increase the risk of injuries.

Awkward position

While lifting up the patient in a compact space can be done in an awkward position.

Opportunities

Transport

The product will transport the patient easier and faster within the small space or stairs

Lifting

Instead of lifting the patient vertically, the product will lift up the patient diagonally so that the emt will use less force

Transformation

transforming from lying positoin to sitting position can elminate a step while transporting the patient

Stairs

making a easier and less-lifting can make less injuries for the emts.

Ideation

Initial idea was to design something that transforms from lying position to sitting position.

Development

After ideation, developing for stair use and the mechanisms that would be involved were critical and important. This scaled model represents a study for the structure and mechanism of the model.
